Winner of three most important awards——Oscar, Golden Bear and Golden Lion and acclaimed as"the star of Taiwan", Ang Lee, is the most fascinating and successful Chinese film director, and has paved the way for Chinese films to enter western mainstream film stage. Two failure attempts in the Entrance Examination of Taiwan shut the door to the university Ang Lee had longed for, yet the window to the mystical world of cinema opened for him. Studying abroad in the United States, he felt the way for his future works, thanks to the conflicts between eastern and western cultures. Consequently, alienation, marginalization are recurring themes in his films. The success of his Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon, changed Ang Lee from a"stranger in a strange land"into a leader of mainstream film industry, and also sparked other famous Chinese directors'enthusiasm in making Wuxia films. no longer roaming in solitude as a stranger, Ang Lee now focuses on the interplay of eastern and western cultures in his new works. In his unique elegant and insinuative style, Ang Lee has been trying to fascinate western audience in his films, often characterized by culture conflicts. The success of his films, depends not only on his skills as a director, but also on his consideration for popularity among audiences, balancing artistic and commercial requirements. Up to now he has directed ten films, three of which are based on original play scripts, while the others are adapted from classical literature, novels and comics. One thing is common: characters of great depth caught up in richly entertaining plots. His use of parallel montage and montage as metaphor, his experience in stage performance, and the skillful rendering of camera, all contribute to his natural yet implicative pictures on screen. The successful use of details is also a key to the perfection of his works. Special objects often serve as a thread of a story, or as a clue of characters'inner world, with the help of camera cuts. Moreover, music often adds to the special effects of physical and psychic environment in his films.Quiet yet passionate, Ang Lee established himself as one of the most acclaimed director in the world.
