Culture Default Reflected In Proverb Translation Between English And Chinese And Its Compensation Strategies

Proverbs is a form of language that accumulates human's experiences and are famous for its deep meaning and its elegant expression. Proverbs also spark with brilliance of human ideology and language glory. Different proverb transmits different cultural information, if the translator does not take those cultural elements into consideration, cultural misunderstanding or cultural loss would arise in translation. This thesis systematically analyzes cultural default reflected in Chinese and English proverb translation. During the process of finishing this thesis, the writer firstly analyze the manifestation of cultural default then further suggest four compensation strategies for dealing with it. The writer give a new angle for dealing with cultural default: translators must deeply understand the cultural connotation message covered in proverbs, good command of cross cultural communication skills and high sense of responsibility, so they can choose the most suitable translating strategy to compensate cultural defaulted elements.
