On Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture From The Standpoint Of The Expansion Of American Mass Culture

With the reform and open policy in China, American Mass Culture infiltrates and Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture has appeared since the 1980s. The main forms of contemporary Mass Culture are electrical media goods such as Hollywood, commercial advertisements etc. and consuming culture goods of the daily life such as MacDonald etc. brought in from America.So where does Contemporary Mass Culture come from? This paper thinks that contemporary Mass Culture comes from America. In the 1920s or so, American Mass culture appears, however, this Mass Culture is the American culture which is formed in the late 19th century. In order to realize its hegemony over the whole world, U.S. has been exporting the goods of Mass Culture to China with American cultural value, in the form of mass media such as movies, magazines, broadcast, multinationals and fast food etc. in the area of Mass Culture. So Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture is the result of the expansion of American Mass Culture to some extent.This paper uses critical theory of Mass Culture about Frankfurt School and combines with the predecessor's achievements of Mass cutural research to define"Mass Culture"again firstly and clarify the essence of Mass Culture and point out that Mass Culture is a cultural phenomenon that is produced by mass profit. Secondly, American Mass Culture spreads the whole world and has great attraction, which has features as follows: commerce, entertainment, daily life, ideology. Analysing the American Mass culture further, we know that in fact Ameirican Mass Culture is bourgeois culture which is in pursuit of individualism and mass profit. Finally, this paper introspects Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture and takes the critical theory of Mass Culture about Frankfurt School as a guide to the critical theory of Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture.Based on the special relationship between American Mass Culture and Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture, we know that Contemporary Chinese Mass Culture is American Mass Culture, which has great effect on cultural lives and consumption style in China, and shocks chinese culture heavily. So China should strengthen the resistance to the infiltration of American Mass Culture and create the Mass Cultural goods with chinese feature.
