John Keats is one of the representatives of romantic poets.Ode to a Nightingale is his remarkable poem, famous for its ecological theme and spirit. It indicates the rupture of ecological harmony and presents an ideal world which is beautiful and harmonious. This thesis, based on the previous studies, analyzes the natural view and ecological theme of Ode to a Nightingale from the perspective of ecocriticism.Ecocriticism is the study of the relationship between literature and the natural environment. It is the production of literary studies and the contemporary ecological thoughts, the greening of literary studies, and the comprehensive responses to the present global ecological crisis. It focuses on the reevaluation of literary works and fixes on the ecological relationship among man, society and nature. In a deeper level,it stresses on the harmony of human nature. This thesis can be divided into seven parts, with five chapters coming between the introduction and conclusion. These five chapters go respectively to literature review, theoretical framework and the rupture of ecological harmony, the reconstruction of ecological harmony and the call for ecological harmony.Chapter One is the literature review. This chapter focuses on the studies of Ode to a Nightingale from different perspectives at home and abroad including the artistic studies, the aesthetic studies and the theme studies. In the theme studies, the ecological theme of Ode to a Nightingale becomes a new view of the study. However, researches in this area are confined to the natural view of this poem, and do not reach the height of ecological theory. This thesis, based on the previous studies, analyzes the ecological theme and spirit of Ode to a Nightingale from the ecological perspective.Chapter Two concentrates on the theoretical framework of ecocriticism. It introduces the ecocritical theories relative to the thesis.Chapter Three discusses the rupture of the ecological harmony. This rupture includes the break of human-nature harmony,human-society harmony and human-human harmony.Because of the serious destruction of nature, the harmonious relationship between man and nature loses balance. There exist acute contradictions in the realistic world and the ideal world.Human beings are oppressed ruthlessly by the society and the social relationships are distorted. The harmonious relationships among human beings also disappear.Chapter Four focuses on the reconstruction of the ecological harmony.Facing the harsh reality, the poet uses his imagination to construct an ideal world which presents a beautiful and harmonious picture and affords a happy and melodious song. The appeal of imagination leads people to get closer to nature. Thus, the outer nature reunites with human nature.Confronted with the sharp contrast between the reality and the ideal world,Chapter Five focuses on the call for ecological harmony. It shows the poet's longing for beauty and harmony. Besides, the poet calls that man should reestablish the harmonious relationship between man and nature, respect for nature, return to nature, learn from nature and regain his spiritual home in nature. In a word,Ode to a Nightingale is full of ecological theme and spirit. It deeply displays the ecological rupture and acute contradictions of the real world, perfectly presents the beauty and harmony of the ideal world, and affectionately expresses the call for ecological harmony. It arouses people's attention that the ecological rupture brings people disaster and misery, while ecological harmony provides people happiness and pleasure.
