On Translation Of English Idioms Into Chinese From Perspective Of Schema Theory

Idiom is the essence of language, the crystal of people's wisdom, and the special language form that is rich in culture. Because every language contains a great number of idioms, it is an issue for many scholars in the world to accurately translate them kept researching and discussing.In recent years, the study of translation is gradually shifted from translation works to translation process. Idiom translation is a practical activity on cognition. With the development of cognitive science, scholars are much interested in the role of translators'cognitive psychology in the translation; meanwhile, schema theory,as one of important and primary concepts in cognitive linguistics, taken an important role in the translation process. It is a valuable research topic to combine schema theory with idiom translation.This thesis attempts to study on how to translate English idioms into Chinese in schema theory. Generally speaking, the translation process can be divided into two phases,including decoding and encoding. In the decoding process, translators try to correctly construe the English idioms through activating, adjusting and enriching hers/his own content schemata, language schemata and formal schemata. In the encoding process, according to the corresponding situations between these two languages'schemata, the translator should activate and adjust Chinese readers'related schemata and set up some new schemata to successfully translate English idioms into Chinese, in order to reach the goal of multinational culture communication.On the basis of schema theory, this thesis shows the possibility of idiom translation from English to Chinese, and presents a relatively thorough discussion on the process of translators'thinking. Through the discussion, this thesis tries to enhance the maneuverability and scientific power on idiom translation, as well as giving some enlightenment to other translators.
