A Study Of Vague Language Selection From The Perspective Of Adaptation

People usually think that language expressions should be precise and clear,but not vague or ambiguous.But in real life,vague language always exists.Since the publication of Fuzzy Set Theory written by Zadeh in 1965,vague linguistics,which takes vague language as its focus of study, has emerged,and the study of vague language has been prosperous.Based on achievements in previous researches,this thesis has studied the source of vague language and the problem of how human beings select vague language in communication from the perspective of adaptation and selection in Darwin's evolution.In Darwin's evolution,the principle of adaptation and selection means that the organic beings can survive only by adapting themselves to the natural environment and accepting the selection from the natural environment.The present thesis argues that language is like an organic being and exists in linguistic communication,and that,in order for communication to go on successfully,language should also adapt to the environment and accept the selection from the environment.With reference to the adaptation and selection in Darwin's evolution,language communication is a process in which adaptations and selections are continuously made.In this process,the communicator is dynamic and plays two functions:accepting the selection and constraint from the environment of communication and,at the same time,selecting language as an important factor of the environment of communication. Vague language,as an inalienable part of language,refers to linguistic expressions generated as a result of adapting to the environment of communication.In linguistic communication,vague language plays a very important role,a role that cannot be replaced by precise language. Vague language selection is the result of language adapting to the environment of communication and the environment of communication selecting language.That is,to put it specifically,in linguistic communication,in order to reach his goal of communication,the speaker has to,first of all,adapt to the environment of communication and accept the selection and constraint from the environment of communication,and then he selects vague language in the name of the environment of communication.Vague language selection adapts to the selection and constraint from the environment of communication,which makes it possible for the goal of communication to be reached smoothly.This thesis has discussed how the speaker selects vague language in order to adapt to the mental world,the social world and the physical world.The thesis holds that the study of the source and selection of vague language from the perspective of adaptation and selection can help people to observe and understand vague language more objectively,develop new ideas and enlarge the horizon of vague language research.At the same time it can help people to make better use of vague language in their linguistic communication.
