China has witnessed an increase in attention paid to the cultivation of professionals in translation, but at the same time relevant researches on translation teaching is far from satisfactory. One of the evidence(s) is that a great majority of studies on translation teaching are conducted from the perspective of the instructor rather than the translation learner. As a result, heated discussions are focused on issues such as "the necessity of teaching translation",and "how and what to teach",while the initiative of the translation learner has long been neglected. The present thesis tries to approach to the issue of the development of translation competence from the angle of autonomous learning. The thesis begins with reviews on concepts and subcomponents of translation competence, and previous studies on the development of translation competence.Combined witha brief analysis on the present situation of translation teaching in China, the study proposes the introduction of autonomous learning into translation learning as a way-out.Then the thesis is devoted to the introduction of the origin and development of autonomous learning, and defines autonomous learning as the extent to which learners display their ability to use a set of tactics taking control of their learning. In addition to that, the significance of promoting autonomous learning in acquiring translation competence is explored.Based on the discussion above, the study is conducted with an investigation and a translation test among 30 third-year English majors.A questionnaire is employed to find the situation of the subjects' autonomous learning, and two translation tests at the beginning and the end of the academic year respectively are graded to get a better understanding of progress made by the subjects over a period of time. After that, the software SPSS13.0 is utilized to find whether there is high correlation between autonomous learning and development of translation competence. The result shows that the third-year English majors are aware of the problem in their translation learning, but either their consciousness or ability of being an autonomous learner is not satisfactory enough. And this is the case with their autonomous learning in translation study. In addition, the study suggests that there is a relatively high correlation between translation learners' autonomous learning and their development of translation competence. But the statistics do not support the hypothesis that a single aspect of autonomous learning may contribute more significantly to the development of learners' translation competence. In light of the results of the study discussed above, the thesis suggests that it is of necessity to promote autonomous learning in the cultivation of English majors' translation competence.
