The lexical chunk theory and its teaching philosophy have been researched a lot in English, but is not the same in Chinese teaching.By reviewing its history and analyzing the current situations and importance of lexical chunks, this article stresses that teaching with lexical chunks would be helpful in solving the long-existed problems in language learning:accuracy and fluency.Especially from the aspect of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL),it proposes a new teaching philosophy. While presenting our understanding in lexical chunks, this article distinguishes lexical chunks and other related definitions such as words, phrases, fixed expressions and sentences etc..We also classify the lexical chunks into three types: fixed structures,fill-in structures and related structures.Considering TCFL,we further classify it into six more detailed types:idioms, fixed match, sentence patterns, phrase frames, related words and group words. An Outline ranking Chinese Vocabularies(《汉语水平与汉字等级大纲》) is the basic reference in TCFL text books' writing and HSK tests.Based on the 352 vocabularies in level A and B in the Outline, this article practical tables of 860 useful Chinese chunks.Besides, this article also analyzes different TCFL text books, students' errors and questionnaires about lexical chunks, and further gives a few suggestions about teaching with chunks.By the end of this article,it tries to figure out an effective example in TCFL with lexical chunks.
