Great achievement has been made in translation practice under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory since its birth. Recently, however, more and more scholars have expressed their doubts on its application. This thesis attempts to affirm the guidance of the theory in translation practice.The translation theories in the past mainly emphasize the correspondence between the source language and target language, and study translation simply from the transference of languages, while Functional Equivalence Theory aims at judging a translation from the extent of sympathy target language readers get with source language readers.This thesis examines two Chinese translations of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from three aspects of functional equivalence theory:"semantic equivalence","stylistic equivalence"and"two principles of equivalence"to illustrate different approaches taken and to point out the focus of each translation. It helps to draw the conclusion that translation is feasible and rough equivalence can be achieved in translation. And also by contrasting and analyzing the examples taken from the two Chinese translations of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the thesis affirms the important role the theory plays in guiding the translation practice.
