Translator's Subjectivity In Xu Yuanchong's Peotry Translation

Traditional translation studies gave priority to the source text and the original author, centering on how to achieve faithfulness or equivalence in translation, while the translator, the most dynamic factor involved in translation, has long been put in a marginal place. Since the"cultural turn"in 1970s, the status of translators has been greatly enhanced. Accordingly, discussions and studies on translator's subjectivity are stirring up waves all over the world. Present studies on translator's subjectivity, however, mainly focus on the macro theoretical analysis and orientation of translators'subjective status while micro studies on a specific translator fail to win due attention, which will surely restrict the development of the theory of translator's subjectivity.As an established translator and translation theorist, Prof. Xu has gained a world-wide reputation for his rhymed translations of Chinese verse. Devoted to translation for over 60 years, he has published both at home and abroad more than 60 books, among which most are translation works of Chinese ancient poetry. Moreover, his years of exploration in translation has given birth to a large quantity of distinctive translation thoughts which later develop into his own theory system of poetry translation. With all of his translation works considered, it could be concluded that translator's subjectivity is everywhere to be seen in Prof. Xu's translation theory and practice.This thesis aims at conducting a case study on Prof. Xu's poetry translation theory and practice from the perspective of translator's subjectivity so as to investigate the influence of translator's subjectivity on Prof. Xu's poetry translation theory and practice and to summarize the native thoughts of translator's subjectivity reflected in his poetry translation theory and practice. This thesis shall focus on discussing about translator's subjective initiative and passivity, in particular, and try to provide the translator with certain suggestions on how to give a full play to subjective initiative so as to handle with the constraints on translator's subjectivity.
