The translator Fulei said: "If various ethnic artists can translate others' writings without altering the idiom of the original language, then they will be able to infuse new cultural blood into their own tradition, and the world's cultures will become richer and richer, more and more glittering." I think that, as a Tibetan translator, my responsibility to our culture is to bring energy from other languages' literature into our own culture to make ours more glittering. Translation is a way of communicating by stepping across both language and culture, and so is a full of contradictions. Translating literature is a kind of imitation but also a kind of creation and art.In the practical arena, translators often make two main mistakes: first, altering the sense of the original work and obliterating the original metaphors, and second, being so literal that the translation is dull and ambiguous. In the practical arena, the translator must avoid these two extremes. First, she must recognize the essence of the art of literature translation. Very little research has been done on Tibetan translation theory, and so there is little to draw from. As a result, there are many difficulties involved in beginning this kind of research. While it is a challenging task, I have taken it as my topic in order to arouse the interest of experts and scholars.
