My paper investigates the early atonal music works of the 20th century composer A. Schoenberg. I try to sum up some regular patterns in three aspects: thematic materials, vertical and horizontal relations of harmonies and treatment of rhythms and meters. In addition, referring to Schoenberg's unique thinking of music and relevant essays, I explore his trailblazing thoughts of composing after abandoning functional tonality. As an attempt to demonstrate my argument, I also choose some works by Brahms as reference to whom Schoenberg expressed his compliments and exaltation. I make comparative account on both Brahms's and Schoenberg's treatments in the three aspects mentioned above and try to clarify the strong "tradition complex"of Schoenberg, the spokesman of 20th century music. Moreover, to the extent, I also try to prove the unity and continuity between tonal music and post-tonal music. The text consists of two parts:Partâ… is an introduction of Schoenberg's early atonal composing and his particular perspective in music and in Brahms. This part is an exploration of Schoenberg's music thoughts.Partâ…¡conducts a analysis of the formal logic of theme types, vertical and horizontal harmonic relations and rhythmic-metric treatments. And I also relate the logic to similar techniques in Brahms's works. This part makes an analysis of Schoenberg's composing practice. The three appendice explain some issues related to the text.
