Art having been developing till now, confuses us a lot. Perhaps the position of painting at present requires us to open our hearts, release our feelings, and seek the significance of "existence" in art. In the late 19th century, August Endell (1871-1925), a painter of Art Nouveau in France, predicted: "A brand-new art is about to come into existence. For this art, the forms and figures in the picture are nothing specific, represent nothing, and arouse no recall. But it is similar to music, and results in the same effect of feelings." Comparing with music, abstract art does have something in common. Music is expressed as these tones without specific meanings or the combination of notes in music score. But through the interpretation of musicians and the listening and feeling of listeners, it could create a mood, a scene or an atmosphere, all of which needn't rely on specific forms or images. What abstract artists want to do is to seek a form of expression, which could get rid of specific images and meanings. This type of artistic works should be composed by the absolute form deriving from subjective hearts. The origin of all expressive force is the form, and the form of artistic work itself is its content. The abstract art makes painting get rid of the influence of literature, no longer be attached to story plots, themes of drama, and moral justice of religions, and then return to the painting language itself: "purified form, or art with conscious structure and form".The practice of abstract art opens up the abstract art discussed in this article, that is manifesting "the world of pure spirits" with abstract point, line, color, and so on. It has two types of styles: one is the lyric art represented by Kandinsky and Malevich, focusing on the richness of colors and the languages of various plastic arts; the other one is the geometric abstraction represented by Dutch painter Mondrian, focusing on the expressive force of geometry composed by parallel and vertical, as well as the simplification of color, so as to convey the effect of calmness and tranquility in dynamic. Both of these two types of abstract art change from the plane to there-dimension, and transfer from the study of exploring pure form towards the research direction of combining form with space, materials and construction step by step.We say that abstract art has a property of "reduction", that's, going back to the starting point to re-understand the world we are living in, including the material world and spiritual world. The abstract art is the most representative artistic school in modern art, and reduces art itself. In this paper, we take three giants of modern painting (Kandinsky, Mondrian and Picasso) as representatives to study systematically the form and theoretical basis of modern painting in the West, so as to grasp the development vein of abstract art theory and its form of artistic expression systematically, and achieve further understanding of and influence on the concept of modern art.
