| Harmony Textbook, created by Sposobin and his colleagues, has a strong presence in the music academy field of China. The objective of this paper shall focus on comparing this theory to other textbooks in harmony which are well-known to Chinese, pointing out the innovating aspects in Sposobin's Harmony Textbook, and analyzing the educational structure following by his approach. It is mentioned in Harmony Textbook by Sposobin and his colleagues that "harmony is the study of chord structures the theory of how to link them" . From this angle, the core materials are practically the same. This runs parallel to what Paul Hindemith had stated "harmony has been explored with the very best, and has been reorganized for hundreds and thousands of times in textbooks". Despite how the materials are conventional, the differences surfaced when core ideas are elaborated from different point of views. This can be achieved by comparing the works among Paul Hindemith, Walter Piston, Arnold Schoenberg, and TH Dubois. Such scrutiny shall reveal the subtle differences that separate Sposobin from others. Moreover, this research will not only expose the uniqueness but also show the limit in terms of theory and practice. Finally, As a conclusion, the reasons for its extensive application in China are deduced.Studying the textbooks of harmony shall deepen our understanding in the core believe of this subject, taking this matter to a higher level. Researching on Sposobin and his theory can be of theoretical references for teachers majoring in this subject. That is also the academic task this paper is trying to fulfill. |
