The study of Ethnomusicology:31 Issues and Concepts is a revised edition of The study of Ethnomusicology:29 Issues and Concepts, which was published in 1983.Two of all its four parts are my undertakings:The Musics of the World and In All Varieties.Established on 31 fundamental issues, this work provides an overview of various related researches in the history of the discipline, together with the author's comments with his own case studies. The book can be counted one of the few publications of its kind in this area. This book review mainly discusses the changes taking place over the last twenty years, focusing on the differences between the original and the revised edition, such as the impact of postmodernism, especially that of gender study, the rising of "world music" and the new perspectives for organology. In addition to the characteristics as well as the thread of thought of the author(the so-called point-line-surface pattern),I pointed out some places that have the space for further improvements.Understandings and perceptions gained through the translation are also included in this part.
