| Along with the development of film industry these years, horror movies start to take an important place in the movie market. Its long history and strong impact on visual effect are accepted and loved by more and more people. Until now, horror movies have occupied a large part of the movie market. The western movie markets take Hollywood as representative; Eastern movie markets, such as Hong Kong, Japan, Korea have all made many excellent horror movies with top box office. Horror movies can be different in historical origin, cultural context, psychological demand etc, which is how horror movies differ in different countries. This article will compare study and analyze the similarities and differences of horror movies of Hollywood, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. This article is divided into three main bodies:The first part is to introduce the definition of horror movies, pointing out which horror movie category this article is about to study. The second part is to understand the historical development of the film industries of Hollywood, Hong Kong, Japanese and Korea. The third part is to compare horror movies of these countries from the aspects of "subject", "narration", "visual language" and "function". The fourth part is the conclusion.Compared to the prosperous development of horror movies in the world movie market, the theoretical circles for horror movies are falling behind. According to my research, there are not too many studies about horror movies, even with few monographs about them. As for now, studies of horror movies are still in an unimportant position in western country. Although there are some theoretical articles which study horror movies from the point of view of psychology, sociology and art, there is none from the angle of cinematics to analyze, interpret and illuminate horror movies. The studies of horror movies in China are even fewer, not only lacking in monographs, but also with very few articles about horror movies from the academic movies publications. Moreover, non-academic movies publications are only limited to the level of commentary, impression and introduction. The lack of horror movies monographs leads to the lack of studies and comparison of horror movies of different countries. This article will use the method of comparison in the third part, analyzing and comparing various countries' unique pattern of horror movies from the aspects of "subject", "narration", "visual language" and "function" etc, in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding about horror movies. However, because of my limited academic field of vision and range, and the lack of relative resources, I might not summarize it comprehensively, but I will try to be accurate. Treatises are focused on interpreting and conclusion. If my article does not analyze deeply enough, and sentences are not sufficient, please comment with no hesitation. |
