New Youth And The Vernacular Movement Of Modern Times In China

Now the words in our inter-personal transmission and written expression are using the vernacular as a tool. This is relative to the classical Chinese of ancient China. In the ancient China, the classical Chinese is dominant. Chinese language evolved into this situation with the evolution of five thousand years up and down and erosion, grinding and recycling of historical torrent. The subject of this thesis is the modern vernacular movement, the most brilliant and epoch-making significance moment in this long evolution, as well as the movement leader, a famous journal New Youth.As we all know that the New Youth is one of the most important modern journals. In the "54" period, it had the tremendous effects on the evolution of Chinese literature. New Youth not only directly triggered the birth of the new literature and affected the new ideas and theories of literature in the"54"period but also has a far-reaching impact on the development of modern literature as well as contemporary literature.As a magazine that having a high status in modern Chinese literary history, there are so many studies on New Youth. However, according to the study of the author, the previous studies focused on the magazine itself and the more macro basis, while concretely taking the magazine and events together is rare. I will be committed to represent the link of "New Youth" and the vernacular movement, putting them into the same space to study.This paper is divided into four parts. The first and second chapters are the foreshadowing section of the whole text. The third and the fourth chapters are the core of the whole text with a detailed analysis and comparative analysis.Through the brief review on the vernacular movement, the first part synoptically introduced the status of vernacular literature in various periods of China, and focused on the efforts of scholars of the Qing Dynasty that have special significance on the development of vernacular literature, as well the epoch-making role that New Youth playing to the vernacular literature. The scholars in the end of Qing Dynasty firstly challenged the orthodox position of classical Chinese with the tireless efforts, laying a foundation for the debut of the vernacular, while the publicity and advocacy that New Youth made to the vernacular gave the onslaught to the old literature formally.The second part began to systematically introduce New Youth under the auspices of the vernacular movement. From the first volume of the classical Chinese writing to the publication of Literary Improvement Discussion and Literary Revolution, until to spare no efforts to name rectification of the vernacular with various promotional tools and strategies in a big way, describe the performance of New Youth in the various stages of vernacular movement. From testing the waters and being cautious in the beginning to taking drastic measures and not being rectified, from the embarrassment of nobody's asking to large-scale questioning and beating back, showing the extraordinary trajectory of constant groping and inquiry on the road that New Youth promoted the vernacular.The third part entered into the core argument section. Chinese people pay attention to right place, right time and right people and these are three important conditions of success. This chapter studied why vernacular movement occurred and why it was leaded by New Youth from two sections that are the inner base and the external environment. By analyzing that in the social environment of the growing national crisis, articles and language are demanded to be Consistent urgently, demonstrated the vernacular movement had good movement soil. By analyzing the purpose of the magazine and the special temperament of the editors of the magazine, found that the inner base of New Youth and the requirements of the vernacular movement are amazingly fit. All these also explain why the vernacular movement could not be completed in the end of Qing.The fourth part is the key argument section. This section focused on analysis of the means of transmission used by New Youth from the start to the final victory in leading vernacular movement. New Youth correctly grasped the audience composition and defined transmission objects, which can be said that it took the initiative in the struggle from the beginning. They targeted to the young, the most enlightened people, having the most fighting spirit and can receive new ideas most easily, enabling to maximize the effects of the transmission and clearly increase the transmission probability of success. The editors of New Youth used agenda-setting principle ahead of time, controlled the objectives and direction of public opinion, making the community become propaganda tool to help it to achieve its purpose of dissemination, which is especially admirable. This part also introduced the housekeeping magic - transmission column. This setting of this column was the finishing touch. It seemed to be natural that the editors expressed their own thoughts and there is no sense of artificiality. The transmission columns made the control ability of New Youth on the public opinion get unlimited expansion.The whole article makes a comprehensive analysis on the leading and promoting role that New Youth playing to the vernacular movement.
