Task-based English teaching model is designed on real tasks and regards finishing tasks as the course of learning, showing what the students have achieved through their performance in class. This model is student-centered and operates on the principle of improving students' practical English abilities.Considering the following three problems resulting from the current English teaching, I wrote this essay. First, in this era of rapid change of economy, society and work world, it is necessary for college students to enhance their key competencies as the means of coping with and adjusting to the changes. Second, the current English teaching focuses too much on explaining the meanings of the words and language points, and therefore it is far from real situations. Third, the current English teaching places much emphasis on the interpretation of vocabulary and students just play roles as audience, which results in the reduction in students' interest in learning English, neglecting developing students' English practical abilities, such as, listening, speaking, writing and interpreting, so English teaching have been always inefficient.This essay focuses on exploring a workable and practical College English teaching model based on tasks to develop students' abilities in practical English and self-teaching and take full advantage of educational function that is, to promote students' key competencies as well and to pay much more attention to students' sustainable development capacity than before. On the basis of studying the theories of education, psychology and other persons' research on task-based English teaching and comparing many different schools of English teaching methods to find their respective merits, I adopted task-based teaching model in the past two years' English teaching and acquired good results.The dissertation is made up of four chapters. The first chapter mainly deals with the background of carrying out task-oriented English-teaching model and research methods. The second chapter mainly talks about the present situation of college English teaching and its problems based on the analysis of the open-ended questionnaire. The third chapter mainly discusses the reform program of college English teaching and shows that the benefits from carrying out task-oriented college English teaching model. The fourth chapter makes the conclusion and put forward some constructive advice to advocate the task-oriented college English teaching model.In conclusion, the author believes that it is essential to reform current English instruction to encourage students' practical competencies enhancing. Task-based teaching model has not only improved students' language skills but also their key competencies.
