Studies of Hugo have made the rich achievement,However,in China, researches for Notre Dame de Paris still rest on obsolete social—historical or general anatomy about the principle of "contrasting beauty with ugliness".Foreign researches relatively focus on the ideological content of novels, the complexity of characters and writing techniques of romanticism, etc, but poor in discussing the achievement of Hugo's novels by the perspectives of the narratology. Referring to narrative theories,This paper endeavour to explore the narrative features of Notre Dame de Paris. This research is just the region which scholars at home and abroad haven't emphasized. The first part is"omniscient narrator and narratorial intrusion".Beginning with omniscient narrator, this part analyzes its functions and reflections in Notre Dame de Paris, and further shows one of the function of omniscient narrator:narratorial intrusion. Directory intrusion and commentary intrusion are mainly cared here when talking about narratorial intrusion in Notre Dame de Paris, then the functions of the them are summarized as:promoting the wholeness of the story, strenthening the authenticity of the content, forming the monism of the interpretation. The second part is"'inward turn':combination of narrator and characters".This part is discussed surroumding three aspects:the first is on witnessed narration,of which the events or cases are narrated by someone who knew or saw them in the works, and which makes the contents and the characters truly and descriptive; the second is on center-focused mode when shaping the two main images Claude and La Esmeralda,by which makes the figures full, lively and tridimensional. The third aspect is on free transformation of mutiple perspectives, mainly external perspective and internal perspective, and its effction by combining omniscient narrator and narratorial intrusion in part one and witnessed narration and center-focused mode in part two:On the one hand to avoid the arbitrary narration of external perspective,on the other hand to make up the limitness and onesideness of internal perspective,to add wideness and sensibility of life,to help to understand the story and characters mutul-laterally.The third part is"encyclopedic narrative".This novel consists of many aspects in Middle Ages such as costoms, religions, royalties, laws, arts, cultures, sciences, etc.Especially some contents on architectre and other non-fiction are inserted in the developing progress of the plots. Through the changing of narrators and interst of knowledge, the novel finds a larger room for narration and "tries to close to life further".The novel tries to show the the multi-level, multi-faceted world of landscape and shapes a complicated novel style which can equal with the complication of the world. All of these make the novel close to an encyclopedia in nature."conclusion"The narrative talents of Hugo manifest in attaching importance to the characters and the epic—like features.
