| Lawrence is celebrated for having written some of the finest fiction in English language. He is not only best known as the writer of the novels, his short fiction has begun to receive much attention more widely in recent decades. Lawrence confessed that he wrote stories just to earn-"running money". But it has been argued that in fiction he was best in the short story. It is acknowledged that Lawrence's short fiction contains a higher proportion of success. He used aesthetics exquisitely in his short stories. He is always aware of the connection of aesthetic and literature and philosophy. Writing of the landscape and still life recorded his aesthetic ideas, as well as art philosophy. He tried to spend each minute celebrating the art, which naturally can be found the existence in his short stories. Besides, the ideology of Lawrence's serves as a source of his fiction, which is elaborated in the short stories, such as his conception of class, family, sex, etc. The people and incidents are not wondering freely, but illustrating his certain ideology or the problem he considers deeply. However, there are many analyses of the novels but rarely on his short fiction, especially in China. Aesthetic sensibilities and ideologies of Lawrence's short fiction are not fully explored by most critics. For this reason, my focus is to trace the emergence of that aesthetic and ideology in the body of Lawrence's short fiction. Through my reading and interpreting, I aim to demonstrate his unappreciated aesthetic and ideology reflected in them. With this aim this thesis identifies three clearly defined chapters. Before the chapters, an introduction is provided, which gives a survey of various criticism of D. H. Lawrence's works and ideologies, and also provides the view point of this thesis. Chapter One provides an opportunity to access Lawrence's aesthetic and ideology as well as their formative origins, providing a synopsis of the whole thesis. In Chapter Two, an analysis is offered of some lesser-known works, exploring the reflection in terms of Lawrence's aesthetics. In Chapter Three, Lawrence's ideology is used as something, we may just say, like a crutch in approaching his short works, since it is doubtless that Lawrence's ideology is served as the source in his work unconsciously, which also reveals Lawrence's real nature and attitude toward class, woman, and life religion. The closing part of this thesis makes a conclusion which on one hand emphasizes the value and status that Lawrence's aesthetic idea and ideology in his short stories. |
