This thesis intends to research systematically into Edith Wharton's(1862一1937) art naturalistic idea who was one of the leading American female writers, and discusses the gains and the losses.Chapter one, Wharton's fiction creation are put in American social background and literature context of 19th century, together with her life experience illustrating the causes for Wharton's naturalistic concept. Wharton was sensitive to the social changes, accepted naturalism influence, and her extensive reading and strong moral sense, these make a unique quality for her naturalistic concept. Wharton's creation realized a kind of convergence and innovation. The last three chapter analyzes the works as the embodiment of Wharton's naturalistic concept.Chapter two study Edith Wharton's pessimistic idea. The protagonists in the novels are the victims of environment, heredity and chance, these figures struggle pathetically and unsuccessfully against their stifling surroundings.This gives a layer of cruel and heavy veil to novels. Chapter three focuses on naturalistic narrative art. Wharton creats the "visibility" theory, explores the diversity of narrative perspective, uses a large number of images. Her active exploration marks her practice of modern naturalistic narrative innovation. Chapter four analyze the hidden moral and spritual meaning in novels. The biggest difference between Wharton and other naturalism writers is that she has always been concerned about the moral significance, There is reason to believe this is why her works has widespread today.After the exposition comes the conclusion, Edith Wharton is an exotic flower in the garden of American naturalism history. Her creation through the naturalism was emphasized to a fairly high degree, she deserved her fame as an classical wiriter.
