With the coming of post-modern era, the elite culture is gradually down the drain, and popular culture infiltrates every aspect of our daily life so quickly. So the elite literature gradually comes close to the popular culture. A Tibetan writer A Lai's novel "Dust settled", which is different from the current popular fiction and popular Internet novel,is a rare work. The novel has attracted wide attention by scholars, but also by the general public. In response to this trend, the famous director Yan Jiangang shot a TV series adapted from this novel. This essay focuses on the difference between the novel and TV series and the reasons behind this difference to further elaborate the transformation from elite culture to popular culture. This essay falls on five chapters:The introduction part will touch upon the contents of this novel, and illustrate the significance, the value and basic elements of the essay.Focus of this paper is to explain the difference between the fiction and the TV series .Chapter one deals with the difference in subject. The theme of the novel is the destruction, and the author's intention is to recall history, "back to the past". Whereas this theme has converted into the Communist party's saving of Tibet in TV series. Because of its breadth and popularity, TV series is more focused on the real educational value, rather than lead the audience to review the real history.Chapter two deals with the difference in Character. Through the analysis of "fool", the novel shapes the tragic lives of many characters that are around the leading character. The fate of these characters is closely linked to the fate of the times. They were suffered under the feudal chieftain system, belonging to the past history, which is quite different from ours today. To make it easier for viewers to communicate with people in the film, TV series has done a lot of changes in shaping of characters.Chapter three copes with the difference in technique of transformation. Unlike narrative novels, "Dust settled" is a text of poetic and liberalization. However, there is not much narrative description of the novel, such as characters, narrative space, environment, etc. But they are embodied in the TV series. This change is a transformation from the literature to ratings. The conclusion sums up the writer's personal views again. The present era is a diverse times with diverse forms of cultures including elite culture, mainstream culture, popular culture in modern china. They should be integrated into one another. That is to say, we can not degrade a particular culture in order to praise another one. The existence of anything is for a reason. Harmonious culture should be fostered in line with harmonious development of multicultural with a view to attaining today's pluralistic society.
