Cultural Study Of The Series Of Chinese New Literature(1917-1927)

Since the 1980s, cultural studies have been introduced into the field of research on Chinese Literature, which more expanded the perspective of interdisciplinary studies. Therefore, the thesis took the methods of cultural studies into the Series of Chinese New Literature (1917-1927) that would enable all researchers to realize the connotations of this selection's efforts on transformation of the national character and the cultural structure of Chinese.China has experienced revolutions three times since the 1860s, but all results were failed. Modern intellectuals generally considered that the psychological cultural structure and the disposition of Chinese nation put an end to the backwardness of their country; and all these cultural structures were based on the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues as the core of Chinese traditional ethics and moral system. As a record and summary, the Series of Chinese New Literature (1917-1927) expressed an urgent requirement to transform the traditional cultural structure and emancipate people's mind. This series of literature contains the following specific subjects.The first theme is the revolution of the traditional ethics and the national character, because both of them are the core confidence of Chinese national cultural structure. Also, the traditional ethics is the basis of the political triumph. To be specific, the revolution contains that to ruin the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues, and to attack the patriarchy and feudal autocracy which belong to the same structure of the feudal ideology that not only standard individual behavior but also be used as mean guns to get people in mental slavery. Just for this reason, the servility of the national character which is shaped by Confucianism should be criticized and evolved, so, this is the second problem to be disposed.How to make the emancipation of woman be true? And how to get people freedom? The initiators of Chinese new cultural movement considered that only modern western bourgeois ideology could be a frame of reference, such as scientific concepts, democratic values, individualism, humanism and concepts of social Darwinism, to criticize the national culture and psychological structures. All these concepts of values established a new way of thinking and cognition and behavior pattern, but also they brought some negative polarities. At that time, more and more youth pursued freedom of marriage and independent personality, they betrayed their families and the old traditions. Whereas, young people were so powerless to resist when they chose to be individual, they took some extreme behaviors under the oppression of reality.Although the literature belongs to high social ideology, it has a significant impact on the structures of national psychological culture. Therefore, the revolution of literature is the foundation of the improvement of the mind. Because of a sense of inferiority from the western power's invasion and the urgency of saving the nation from extinction and struggle for survival, modern intellectuals animadverted on their traditional cultures in the past time. So they could not handle a rational and objective attitude to their culture and western culture. Whether positive or negative, tradition had been engraved deeply in nation's marrow. Depended on the stimulation from the western culture excessively, the negativities had been acted. One of the most significance was the abnormal psychology and irrational behavior patterns of young people whom took the extreme individualism as their philosophy. Also they destroyed traditional opera and even wasted Chinese character extremely.How to practice the transformation of disposition of Chinese nation and psychological structures is a question. Old tradition could not be abandoned utterly, the best way is making a transformation in the self-reflection.
