Research On Luo Xianglin's Baiyue Nationality

Luo Xianglin was a famous historian as well as an expert on Baiyue national history in modern China. He was well educated from his family when he was very young. When he grew up, he pursued his studies at Tsinghua University, where he studied under a crop of distinguished teachers, such as Liang Qichao, Zhu Xizu, Chen Yinque, Lu Maode, Kong Fanyu,Qian Xuantong, Sun Aikan, Zhang Xinglang, Feng Youlan, Xu Dishan and so on. Luo Xianglin developed his interest in national history of China, especially Baiyue national history in Tsinghua University, which laid a good foundation for his scholarly pursuits in the future. He acquired large numbers of outstanding achievements in Baiyue national history, for example, he published more than twenty academic theses and two works. From the establishment and development of modern national history knowledge, not only Luo Xianglin was the earliest scholar in researching Baiyue national history systematically, but also he brought about new ways in national history research, which made him occupy an important position in modern Chinese national history.However, Luo Xianglin's academic achievements were not well-known in Chinese Mainland's academe because he taught in Hong Kong for a long time after 1949 and some other factors. After Chinese reform and openness, Mainland's academic circles have paid attention to Luo Xianglin's research results on Hakkaology and the history of Hong Kong,religions and traffic at home and abroad and have published some research theses, but they have not dealt with Luo Xianglin's fruits on national history especially Baiyue national history. In the light of this, this paper tries to read carefully Luo Xianglin's material at first hand, conclude systematically his theory, methods and features, evaluate appropriately his contributions and influences on Baiyue sphere.This paper includes four chapters. The first chapter makes a brief introduction to Luo Xianglin's life, his family environment and the influence on academic life from his teachers and friends, reveals the causes of his Baiyue national history research. The second chapter interprets in detail Luo Xianglin's theory, methods and practice. The third chapter analyzes systematically his academic achievements and shortcomings. The fourth chapter presents my own ideas and conclusions based on the whole paper.
