Intellectuals Surrounded By The Social Life

We must talk about Chili when we mention the new realistic ficiton in the history of contemporary literature. In the middle of the 1980s, her trilogy of life----Disturbing Life, The Sun's Birth and No Talking about Love become the representative works of new realistic ficiton. And Chili is also regarded as one of the authors of new realistic ficiton. Many of the works of Chili have lead to the far-reaching concerns from readers and audience, and they even formed phenomenon of Chili.In some way, comparatively, we can say that her works tightly grab the pulse of the times,and reading them can help us know about social situation of that time.Among her works,the ficition with the intellectuals as the subject matter is not the most in number, and the intellectual's image shaped in her fiction is far less entrenched than the urban-petty-bourgeois image. However, the intellectual's image in her fiction can not be neglected. The intellectuals shaped in her fictions have obvious flavour of the times.Through them, we can spy out some changes of the whole period in social transformation. This paper cuts in from cultural perspective,and then analyzes the shaping of the intellectual's image, her attitudes to intellectuals and the writing model,all of which voices her opinion to the intellectuals.The intellectuals are awlays belittled in her works.Although they have slumped into the social life and infected by the citizen life, they still keeps the characteristics of the intelllectuals in their spiritual world.In some way, we can say that they step into the social life one foot and roam in the spiritual world of the haughtiness of traditional intellectual the other. They represent a vicarious world and become the target of taunt and critique inevitiably. Besides,she deconstructs the spirit of the intellectuals and shows the tendence of belittling the intellectuals,which is demonstrated by their ideals are dispeled by the social life in many places in her works. Chilli adopts irony and comparision in the dipicting of the intellectuals,they make the absurdness and embrassment of the intellectual in the period of socail transformation more vividly and incisivelyThe second part analyzes the primary reason why Chili shaped the intellectuals like this furtherly----the urban-petty-bourgeois complex.In her ficitions,the counterpart of the intellecutal's image is the urban-petty-bourgeois image. Her urban-petty-bourgeois complex carries the deconstruction of elite intellectual's words. Firstly, we see from the view of the content of her works.As an important new realistic fiction writter, she mainly describes the daily life of the urban petty bourgeois, emphasizes natural resurgence and description of the ordianay people and theirs daily life.We can see that the intellectuals abandon ideals and adapts to the situation, which makes her works have strong tendency of social life.Secondly, we see from the attitude to literary writing and standpoint of literary writing of the author. Chili abandons the conventional attitude to literary writing of top-down approach for the intellectuals.She always places herself in the midst of citizens in the whole creation process and shows secular life. In this process, she completes the dispelment of the tranditonal intellectual far away from the realistic idealism by chewing over the temporal world. At last, we can see her fictions adopt nagged narrative art. Her works patiently describes the details of life, which gives us the feeling of naggish. This is tipical of narrative art for citizen taste. Her drone on the personal utterance realizes the subversion of grand narration of the intellectuals.All in all,the whole creation of Chili's fictions embody a strong urban-petty-bourgeois complex and have some kind of identification and appriciation of civic life and civil spirit. The intellectuals appear as the counterpart of civic life and citizen's values in Chili's fiction. Chili does not adopts the examining view of the top-down approach used in tranditional literature for the intellectuals.Conversely, she adopts the view of urban-petty-bourgeois and attitude of plebeian. This places the intellectuals in the period of social transformation and the urban petty-bourgeois at the same level of social life. In some extend, we can say Chili appricates the lifestyle and value of the urban-petty-bourgeois,which shows the hypocrisy and powerless of the intellectuals after elimination of elitism.The third part of this paper tries to make a simple evluation of Chili's writing thought. Looking from the view of whole development history of Chinese liturature in the 20th century, the author thinks both the belittled intellectuals and the social urban petty bourgeois embody the citizen awarness and the-urban petty-bourgeois complex of Chili, complete the subversion and dispelment of the once passionate idealism of the 1980s.Compared with the intellectuals in excessively politics and grand narrative context, this is a surpass.However, her lack of deeper knowledge of the intellectual's position and too closely realistic desciption of the intellectual's life make her fictions less persuasive. Besides,her patterned, modeled and stereotyped shapping of the intellectuals makes us thinks she lacks of imagination.
