Song of Solomon is the third work of Tony Morrison, she is the first female African-American writer who gets the Nobel Prize. The novel is a masterpiece of Magic Realism, which is believed to be the parallel work with another milestone of Magic Realism-One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Magic Realism belongs to one of the modern literature genre, which has its own distinctive characteristics. The most typical feature is that all the plots are based on the reality while represented by means of "magic" or "fantancy", however, the final purpose is to reveal the reality that is not easy to solve inreal life, especailly used to reflect the mental reality, specifically in this work, it focuses on the mental predicament of Black people at the present time, specifically in 1930s.The thesis would be accomplished with the direction of Magic realism. By researching on the magic elements, the thesis would like to reflect the severst problem that exists in Black people's reality, especailly the mental predicament. As the surbordinate group in American, the Black people suffer the great pain both physically and mentally. Which revealed inthe novel from three levels. The inferiority complex about the Black culture; the assimilated Black culture and the "twoness", that is the two culture identity. The anlysis on reality is fulfilled by the analysis on magic elements and the individuals which involved in the novel. The realities that the Black faced in political, economical and spiritual world, especially the spiritual world are the emphasis of Morriosn. In the conclusion, by analyzing the reality behind the magic elements, the realities of Black in Ameica are illustrated, and Morrison also supplies the solutionfor the problem, that is represented on the hero, Milkman, to find the Black identity in their African American culture, to fly away from the whitened society, to seek the identity of them own, then you can get ease and peace and enjoy the freedom of flying.
