Local landscape painting is the oil painting what depicts rustic scenes and peasant life. Local landscape painting in China has developed for one hundred years from the introduction. This paper proposed the development of Chinese local landscape painting from two aspects which contain the development sources and development status of local landscape painting, and explored the practical significance of Chinese landscape painting under the local context based on the mission carried by the local landscape painting.This article is divided into five parts in totle. The first part traced the source of West giving an overview on the development of painting local scenery in Western, which included three steps:enlightened period, independent development period and fast development period.The second part seeked the root of China giving an overview on the development history of local landscape painting in China., which included the introduction and early development of Chinese local landscape painting, it's development status in the early days of new China, and it's development at the background returning to theme in the 80's.The third part discussed the new development of local landscape painting since 90s in China, which including the territoriality and the performance language development about Chinese local landscape painting.The fourth part investigated the realistic significance of local landscape painting in China, mainly including two aspects that the needs of artists releasing their emotions and psychological needs of urban public.The fifth part looked into the future development prospects of the Chinese local landscape paintings, hoping that by a detailed analysis of local landscape painting Chinese local landscape paintings more close to life rather than catering to business in the future development, are more suitable for the aesthetic needs of the public, allow the public to consciously accept, make the public realize their "culture abundance "dreams in a round well-off society.
