Vietnam neighbours China, and the two countries have a long history of interaction, Chinese culture historically having had a significant impact on the Vietnamese. Chinese education in Vietnam has a long history. Based on information collected on the situation in Hochiminh city, a relatively thorough survey is conducted of Chinese education aimed at people of Chinese ancestry in Vietnam. Four aspects are considered as part of this survey. Firstly, details of the general social situation for people of Chinese ancestry in Hochiminh City, including the distribution of ethnic Chinese in the city, the existing state of affairs, and cultural characteristics and social activities. Secondly, the unique linguistic characteristics of Hochiminh City's ethnic Chinese and characteristics of their Chinese cultural education is examined. Thirdly, a comparison of the different characteristics of ethnic Chinese and non-Chinese students'Chinese language education is investigated, and finally, a comprehensive evaluation of Chinese language education in Hochiminh City is presented. The author believes that apart from fostering the ability to apply the Chinese language, educators also pay attention to maintaining the fostering of Chinese culture's unique characteristics; to this day Vietnam has not had formal Chinese schools-most are merely cram schools-and Chinese teachers are not only in short supply, but are generally of a low standard (this situation is gradually improving); there is also a lack of integrated and unified Chinese language teaching material。...
