The Chinese literature in the 1980s was turbulent. It broke out from a long-term depression, released its inner restlessness, and showed its vigorous vitality. The development of literature in 1980s was like the surging tide in spring. There were different kinds of literary phenomena. Various ideological trends of literature contended freely, and literary creation got a good harvest. Numerous literary journals, which stood in the front of literature, witnessed and participated in the history of literary evolution.The past has been forgotten as time flies. Among the literary journals in the 1980s, China Journal has not been forgotten by many people. It was started by the famous writer Ding Ling, who did her utmost to deal with the complicated affairs; but it had to be forced to stop publication and shut down when it had lasted for two years. China Journal has left an indelible impression on most readers, especially the young by its vibrant character and radical spirit of enlightenment. China Journal recommended many young authors who were unknown to the public, and encouraged them to create greater works that regard literature as life experience.This thesis will research on China Journal, and try to return to the literary scene in the 1980s and experience the surging literary times. The existence of China Journal confirmed the truth that Ding Ling finally located herself in the spirits of May 4th Movement of 1919 with her natural and distinctive personality. Compared with the main literary journals, China Journal was marginalized at that time. However, due to its exploratory practice and generous support for the new force of literature, China Journal had built a significant sight for the whole literature in the 1980s. Although it only lasted two years, China Journal could be considered to be one of the greatest literary journals that are worthy of our sustained attention because of its magnanimity.
