Studying The Influence Symbolist Poetry Has On Musical Impressionism

Symbolist poetry and musical impressionism are two sects deriving from a common source,both influenced by trends of symbolist thought.The art of symbolist poetry is one of the important branches during the transition period from the traditional art of the western poetry to the art of modern new poetry,reflecting the characteristic social mental state of decadence and pessimism in the end of the 19th century in the western world revealed by its allegorical,philosophical and unique visual experience.Because of the hysteresis quality of the musical development,the creation of musical impressionism is greatly influenced by symbolist poetry,e.g.a number of reforms such as in selecting raw material,technique reforms and acoustics,etc.are closely linked to symbolist poetry.This article primarily focuses on,by the example of the two works,the analysis on the influence symbolist poetry has on musical impressionism in the cultural environment in the late 19th and early 20th century when the thought trends of symbolism prevailed.This article includes 3 parts:The 1st part:the origins of thought trends of symbolism and impressionism.Briefly introducing impressionist literature,the basic features of poetry,the common social background,philosophical foundation and the aesthetic pursuits of symbolist literature and impressionism,expounding the identity of the aesthetic characteristics and the inevitable influence of the former on the latter.The 2nd part:the influence of Mlallarme and symbolist poetry on the creation of musical impressionism.Expounding the influencial factors of Mlallarme and symbolist thought trends that influenced musical impressionist drawn on the life experiences of the musical impressionist masters Debussy and Ravel.The 3rd part:analysis of the works of musical impressionism created in use of symbolist poetry.Based on the two works,adapted from Mlallarme's poems,that are typical of musical impressionism,this article analyses the composing techniques innovation,summarizing the influence that symbolist poetry has on the composing techniques of the musical impressionist works.This article tries to analyze the influence of the symbolist poetry on the compositon of musical impressionism to ensure that the essence of the musical impressionism is apprehended or understood more exactky.
