Joyce Carol Oates (1938—) is a famous prolific female writer in the contemporary American literary circle. Taking Existentialist View as the theoretical framework, the thesis attempts to investigate Jesse's living predicament and self-pursuit under the social background in Wonderland, so as to prove that no matter how hard the environment is, Jesse still can realize himself by means of choosing freely and shouldering the responsibilities.Introduction contains a brief review of Oates'fictional writings as well as a review of literature about Oates'novel Wonderland. Chapter one is a study of Jesse's absurd living background. In 1930s Great Depression struck America. During 1960s and 1970s, Americans were prosperous and wealthy but spiritually empty. Those things bring the United States constant turmoil from the early 60s to early 70s. In such a noisy chaotic world, Jesse falls into a material and spiritual crisis of survival. Chapter two explores into the living plight of Jesse. By analyzing the living predicament of Jesse from an early age to middle age, this chapter explains that Jesse's living predicament is unavoidable under the social context at that time. Chapter three interprets how Jesse explores and realizes himself in the difficult life journey. By analyzing Jesse's free choice and responsibility in different difficult historical periods, this chapter shows the ultimate value of life pursuit, which itself is with the tragic color. However, the process is wonderful and beyond the secular ethics, from which you can really enjoy spiritual freedom.At last, the conclusion part makes a concise summary of what has been discussed. And then the thesis reveals the creative significance of Oates's novel Wonderland. The author points out that Joyce Carol Oates is a serious writer and her works have been exploring the important theme of human existence.
