There are 56 ethnic nations living in our broad land. Due to differences in the geographic environment and culture, China's traditional residential buildings are in various forms, which are the most geographically distributed and reserved architectural shapes.Nevertheless, these residential buildings are in the danger of disappearing: on the one hand, the demand of improvement of living conditions in rural areas is urgent, on the other hand, the blind worship of reinforced concrete connected buildings of the rural residence leads to the indifference and ignorance to the traditional residential architecture. Both indifference and ignorance will inevitably lead to the loss of traditional residential buildings and their decoration language. Accordingly, the contemporary design community misuses the different design elements from north and south severely, which make the symbolic system chaotic. Consequently, neither the traditional elements of residential interior design are not extracted optimally, nor distinction of the design language from the South and the North is well distinguished. Gradually the uniqueness of residential buildings is lost. For a non-renewable historical and cultural heritage, the status quo disappoints us. In this paper, we attempt to address the following issues: how to inherit the tradition of this unique design style and traditional interior design in the new situation; how to synthesize the new design concepts, material technology and construction practices with the traditional residential interior design; how to look for the innovation for the tradition.First of all, based on considerable existing literature and documents, this study collates and analyzes the traditional houses in Huizhou and Inner Mongolia systematically. Besides, the geographical environment, history and culture, cultural ideas and customs of life are also highlighted in this paper. Our focus is on four facets: construction layout, decoration materials, color used indoor and outdoor and symbol system. Further, we tried to refine and refractor traditional residential architecture of the interior design language from the perspective design language.Secondly, we comparatively studied the geographical and cultural differences between the two regions and symbolic language based on the difference between farming culture and the nomadic culture. Then we extracted regional characteristics of the design language, and combined with the sustainable development and green design as a theoretical basis for design practice. Finally, in engineering practice, the theory developed in this paper can be tested. And by analyzing the typical cases, we tried to explore the novel way for residential housing design. We hope that our research can provide effective theoretical support to the nationalization and globalization of the local design. In addition, we hope that this paper can shed some lights to the contemporary chaotic interior design community.
