| The study of film music which could not be neglected is the part of the film theory. And in terms of the sources of musical materies, the "unoriginal music", is not the soundtrack specially composed for the films, but the existing one prior to them. Since the birth of film, using "unoriginal music" has been the very common way in film making.Wong Kar-Wai is one of the internationally renowned film directors from Hong Kong, who is good at using "unoriginal music" in his works. He has appropriated a large number of pre-existing musical materies with different styles, ranging from Latin dance music, psychedelic rock music, Hong Kong and Taiwan pop songs to the traditional Chinese opera or folk songs, and even other film soundtracks, only to set up distinct personality traits for his films.In this paper, the methods and characteristics of options of "unoriginal music" in Wong Kar-Wai's films will be analyzed based on the film context, musical background, and social cultures. And to open up a way to exploring the director's audio-visual language and narrative style, the presentation and expression of the film music will also be discussed. |
