This paper is mainly on the "evil" of Hawthorne's works, attempting to explore and summarize Hawthorne's unique views of human nature by describing,analyzing the characteristic and the variation in mind of the "evil". Then, it comes to Hawthorne's concept of life about the time he lived in and exposes all of his advance awareness by describing the course of salvation of the "evil". Four Chapters consist of the whole text.Chapter One pays focus on Hawthorn's view on evil in the deep of people mind by offering the main keys consisting of his points. The first section exposes the deep-going impact of Puritanism on Hawthorne. The next section illuminates Hawthorn's pain and loneliness suffering from the terrible sin in Hawthorne's family history. The third section observes Hawthorne's frustration from his practice on Brook Farm.And the last section conducts Hawthorne's disappointment by comparing the "Honest" in one of his fictions with most "evil" in his other works.The second chapter lays the images of the "evil", and four characteristics of the "evil" are illustrated and explored. The first section describes the "evil" wearing black veil which symbolizing the defect of human nature of hypocrisy.The next section shows the "evil" pursuing the "ruby" who symbolizing the greed soul of human. The third section named "the mental disordered betrayers" exposes the disloyal and the timid nature of human. The forth section shows the images of loneliness and of cold blood. And the last section analyzes the shadows of human nature, some diehard thinking patterns leading to all the defects of the "evil":self-interest,self-importance and indifference.Chapter Three is for the salvation of the "evil", and there are three steps to save the "evil". The first is to confess one's sin.The second is to pass through the difficult position referring to the point on the natural world of Transcendentalism. The third is to encourage the "evil" to help themselves as what Transcendentalism claimed.Chapter Four concludes Hawthorn's cultural reflection on the "evil". In the first part, it suggests that Hawthorn suspects the alienation of life by his consideration on the rational faculty.In the second part; it concludes that Hawthorn's pursuit is to find the balance in human emotion and intelligence.Conclusion:Hawthorn explores human nature by exposing the "evil", and considers the probable way to save the "evil" independently. Hawthorn's concept not only acknowledges the traditional partially but also takes some feature as modernity, which is accepted and popular even today.
