On Retranslation From The Perspective Of Hermeneutics-a Comparative Study Of Three Chinese Versions Of Jane Eyre

Through analyzing literary works retranslation from the perspective of hermeneutics, the paper aims to demonstrate that retranslation is reasonable and important with the case study of comparing three Chinese versions of Jane Eyre. In recent years, literary works retranslation becomes so popular that it attracts many scholars'attention. They begin to study the causes of the phenomenon and its theoretical basis. However, the previous studies exclusively focus on translators'different translation strategies. The development of hermeneutics provides a newer and profounder research angle for studying different translation versions. Hermeneutics is a theory on understanding and interpretation of meaning. Modern hermeneutics holds that each reading can produce new understanding. This thesis employs modern hermeneutics representative figure Gadamer's theory, such as"prejudice", and"horizon fusion", to study how translators understand and translate texts. It also analyzes the"effective history"of translations and demonstrates various reasons which lead to different translations.Jane Eyre is a classic of Charlotte Bronte, who is a famous British writer. It also has many Chinese readers. The three Chinese translation versions chose in this paper are the most influential ones, translated by Li Jiye, Zhu Qinying, and Huang Yuanshen respectively. By applying hermeneutics to the study of three Chinese versions, this paper gets the following conclusions. First, the peculiar prejudice of every translator endows him with different understanding of the original text, various diction and translation strategies. Second, horizons of the translator and the text achieve new fusion every time when he starts to read it. At last, the effective history of translation versions also calls for new translations at different periods.
