A Study On The Sage View Of Xunzi

Xun Kuang, as an integrator of criticism on the philosophy in Pre-Qin period, on the basis of the previous Confucian Schools, reviewed the thought and academic achievements of various schools, synthesizing and adopting and innovating the merits of each school, establishes his own ideological system. Via the study of his thought, the philosophical thought in Pre-Qin period can be induced systematically and compared with details. But, as an important component of Pre-Qin Confucian School, the essence of Xun Zi concerns philosophy, logic, pokitics, morals, etc.. A study of Xun Zi at all levels is beyond the writer. Thus, his thought of Sage is adopted as the perspective of the research.As an important part of Chinese philosophy, the thought of Sage is more eminent in the study of Pre-Qin philosophy. Among the diverse study of Xun Zi, the focus on his thought of Sage is rare, let alone the systematic study. Based on the careful exploration and discussion of the previous academic achievements, the writer is bold to touch the topic for a further and more comprehensive understanding of Xun Zi.The significance of the study on the thought of Sage can be induced as follows: First, a better understanding and detailed comparison between Confucius', Mencius'and Xun Zi's thought of Sage can be made via the exploration of its origin. Second, a fruther analysis of"The Sage that facilitates dissecting and getting more holy inside and outside for way of king"from the perspective of personality can be got via the induction and classification of Xun Zi's thought. In the end, the current social problems can be expected to be solved and the thought of Sage will be developed via the discussion of realistic state and its research.The present research contains five parts. The thought of Xun Zi is explored under the idiological background in the Spring&Autumn and Warring States era in the introduction. The origin of thought of Sage is discussed in the following part with a diachronic comparison of Confucius', Mencius'and Xun Zi's thoutht. Then, from the perspectives of cultivating one's moral character, the research attempts to comprehensively analyze Xun Zi's viewpoint of heaven, study, and man's nature, ritual propriety and epistemology. And it is followed by a further understanding of Xun Zi's thought, caused by the rise and complete beautification of the Sage, aiming at expressing the idea to manage the world. Finally, combing the thought of Sage and the contemporary social problems, it can be seen that its ultimate goal is to construct the society in good order, which also meets the needs of the current social demand. Therefore, how to hunt for the origin of the significance of life and the sustenance of the soul in the moral crisis of Chinese, and how to rationally combine the tool and value will crucially enlighten the present construction of harmonious society. That is why a sociological perspecive of thought of Xun Zi is adopted to solve the current social problems.
