| With the rapid development of economy, the constant deepening of the reform and opening-up policy, and the entry into WTO, China has emerged as a giant in the world and is playing an increasingly important role in the global economy and politics. In the context of ever-growing international exchanges, China witnesses an unprecedented rise of international status and an increasing contact with many countries on the international arena. On many important occasions, especially in International Conferences, China's leaders undoubtedly deliver speeches to publicize Chinese government's standpoints on political, economic, social and diplomatic affairs. Therefore, the translation of Chinese speech texts is of great significance for the accurate rendering of China's political standpoints and the promoting efforts to developing diplomatic relations. My translation practice is based on four speeches from three Chinese national leaders with the same theme of promoting China's diplomatic relations with other nations. The translation of political leaders'speeches is a major part of translation for foreign affairs which has always been a priority over the translations of other kinds in China. It is essential for effective communications and friendly contacts between China and with other nations. The translated text of leader's speech is a kind of foreign correspondence and has informative and expressive functions. In their speeches there are many political viewpoints and Chinese government's policy, which gives small space for translators'imagination. Translators must reproduce equivalent effect and precise meanings by retaining the sentence or text structure of the original and translate what the leader wants to express.Because of the demand of extremely professional translation and highly political sensitivity for the translators in this field, the author explores the principle and specific translation strategy firstly by independently translating speech by Premier Wen Jiabao at the Japanese Diet, and then comparing it with the given translation provided on the web. In this study, the relevant principles and specific translation strategies on how to translate leaders'speeches are stated and backed up by some evidences from my translation practice and the relevant theories. I hope that this research can offer inspiration to those who are interested in the same field of translation. |
