| Reading is an important way to acquire knowledge and understand the world. It is particularly important in English learning. For English teachers in vocational colleges, it is the most important to help students master reading strategies, cultivate their good reading habits and develop their reading ability. In English teaching, English reading ability cultivating is the basis of various capabilities. The basic objective of college English reading teaching is to enhance students'reading abilities of understanding practical writings to meet their actual future needs of front-line operational work in their foreign-related communication. But the current reality is that the majority of students in vocational colleges have a relatively poor foundation of English at the time of admission. Their reading ability is poor and they do not know how to read English effectively. The research was carried out to make up for the insufficient reading ability of college students and investigate an effective reading teaching approach of vocational college English.This study is under the guidance of Kohen's Strategies Based Instruction (SBI) theory, Schema Theory, and Krashen's Input Hypothesis and the Affective Filter Hypothesis. According to the investigation result of reading strategies used by vocational college students in the process of reading and their actual reading performance, the auther carried out a 13-week experimental training in reading strategies in Hebei Judicial Police Vocational College. After training, the experimental class got a significant improvement in English reading and a significantly increased strategic awareness, confirming the effectiveness of reading strategy training.Conclusion was drawn from the experiment: training in reading strategies can improve vocational college students'reading ability; reading strategy training can enhance students'awareness of strategy; Strategies Based Instruction (SBI) is an effective way in vocational college English teaching.This paper is divided into five chapters: Chapter One is the introduction; Chapter Two is literature review which discusses the research outline of foreign language reading strategies, theories on teaching reading strategies and the theoretical framework; Chapter Three is design for the research and the procedure of reading strategy training; Chapter Four is the analysis and discussion about the result of the reading strategy training; Chapter Five discusses the conclusions and pedagogical implications of this study and analyzes the shortcomings of this study and areas for improvement. |
