This thesis is an empirical study on the application of teaching English lexical chunks in college. It has existed for a long period that input is emphasized, while output is neglected in college English teaching. So, how to improve the quality of EFL learners'language output effectively has been focused on by many linguists recently at home. In order to solve the problems encountered in teaching, the author studies the theories of lexical chunks, the related literature about Lexical Approach, language input and output, and graded teaching. Then combined with teaching practice, the Pyramid Practice Mode is devised by the author creatively, which is a mode of output practice of lexical chunks based on topics. And three related hypotheses are proposed by the author as well. A teaching experiment is conducted for a semester, in which the Pyramid Practice Mode is followed in experiment classes. The data is elicited from two tests of CET-4, two oral English exams and the questionnaire about the improvement in oral output. The hypotheses put forward in the thesis are validated based on the discussion and analysis of the data by means of SPSS 16.0 and Excel 2003. Regardless of the limitations of the research, it indicates that the Pyramid Practice Mode, as a concrete mode of Lexical Approach, can facilitate the improvement of EFL learners' language output effectively. And the improvement of EFL learners'written output in grade B is much greater than that in grade A. In conclusion, the Pyramid Practice Mode is a feasible, effective and valuable mode of English teaching and learning. It is worth giving much more attention in the further exploration, especially to English teaching and learning for students in grade B. They can develop their awareness of lexical chunks in this method, and enhance their competence of language application at last.
