The Stylistic Features Of Sports English And Its Translation

The wonderful performances of Chinese athletes in the Olympic Games and the successful 29th Beijing Olympic Games have accelerated sports to boom and mushroom in China. As an important part in people's daily life, sports events and report has been enjoyed by the masses. In particular, international sports report such as Olympic Games, World Cup and the report of some Chinese sports stars in international arena have covered the media to attract the attention of the public. However, a thorough and comprehensive summary of sports English translation has not been conducted compared with the booming sports development. Based on the Skopostheorie and the stylistic of sports English, the paper focuses on exploring some useful and efficient translation strategies of sports English.The thesis consists of six parts. The first part presents a general introduction to research background, research questions, theoretical framework, research methodology, significance of the research and layout of the thesis. The second part is literature review, which overviews the previous studies of sports translation and styles. The third part introduces the theoretical framework---the Skopos theory. The fourth part conducts a thorough analysis on the stylistic features of sports English. The fifth part, as a core of the thesis, explores some practical translation strategies on the basis of the stylistic features of sports English under the guide of the Skopos theory. The sixth part draws a conclusion and points out the limitations and suggestions for the related studies.The thesis mainly conducts a thorough analysis of the stylistic features of sports English from grammatical, lexical and semantic aspects. Furthermore, some useful translation strategies on the basis of the stylistic features of sports English have been explored under the guidance of the Skopostheorie. In order to content their enthusiasm and appreciation on sports report, sports English translation aims to deliver accurate sports information to target readers as soon as possible. In the light of the Skopostheorie, some useful translation strategies including transliteration, literal translation, free translation, literal translation plus explanation, adaptation and class shift translation have been explored to realize accurate sports information deliverance and cultural communication between China and the rest world.
