Science & technology progress and sustainable development are developing issues. Despite of its short history, it draws the attention from scholars home and abroad with remarkable fruits, for their crucial importance to human destiny. The research on the interrelationship between these two, however, is still too young to have a complete system, requiring development and perfection, which inspires the idea to compose this paper in the author who recognize the necessity and originality of this issue. The access to various and abundant materials and references forms a foundation for some basic knowledge and the present paper intends to make it theoretical and systematic. The paper begins with synchronic and diachronic studies of both science & technology progress and sustainable development, with a view to getting an objective assessment of the former. The author probes into the diachronic interrelationship between science & ?technology progress and sustainable development at present and in the future, pointing out the coexistence of challenges as well as opportunities, puzzles as well as progresses.Introduction being included, the present paper is composed of five parts. Introduction provides a brief account for the choice of the concerned issue. Chapter One poses the possibility and necessity of writing this paper and points out the existing problems by conducting a integrative analysis of the current discoveries in science & technology progress and sustainable development, which is the essence of this part.Chapter Two talks about one of the most important issues in the paper?the interrelationship and coexistence of science & technology progress andsustainable development. The developmental and realistic studies show us the mutual accelerating relationship between these two fields. The thesis approaches it mainly from the following two perspectives: the science & technology progress directed by the developmental view and the sustainable development motivated by the science & technology progress. On the one hand, the insights into the history of technology and the relationship between science & technology progress and the developmental view show us that, different developmental views lead to different views on science & technology progress?when the desire to develop comes forth in the human beings, they demand science & technology progress. The primitive developmental recognition, in this stage, however, mainly focuses on the survivorship, pursuing the harmonious relationship between human beings and the nature. The original technology guided by this mind, the accumulation and application of experiential knowledge, only allows a limited processing and reform for certain instruments or subjects of labor. It just leaves the mysterious and powerful nature all intact and the science & technology progress in this sense is only a means of survivorship. The traditional developmental view comes forth along with the development and flourishing of technology, while its formation in turn inspires technology to develop and the human viewpoint on science & technology progress to change. Originally, it considers the economic rises as its core and, under the guidance of human superiority over nature, takes it for granted that nature is what human being can conquer, enslave and plunder from. Influenced by this misunderstanding, technology is instrumental, by which human can efficiently conquer the nature, reform the nature, damage the nature and at the same time suffices the demands of material life. Right under the motivation of this traditional developmental view with "pragmatism" at it core, science & technology progress reach its culmination of destruction on nature, as well as its pinnacle of prosperity. Technology develops in depth and extent in the 20th century, the7human being, after tasting the technological fruits and degusting the revengeful fruitage, begins to reflect on his technological mind and acts, seeking for the possible way for his own development. The view of sustainable developm...
