With the development of market economic reform and China's entering to WTO, the reform of sports industry is put into the public agenda and continuously deepened. Since China successfully won the right of holding 2008 Olympic Game, the development of sports industry has being gained more and more attention.Starting from analyzing the definition, content and characteristic of sports industry, this paper is to expatiate on the basic content and development tendency of modern sports industry. In comparison of the Chinese sports industry to that of developed countries, this paper is to study the actuality of sports industry of China and the challenges and problems faced with it, then it puts forward the viewpoint that to develop the sports industry on a large scale and in a proper time. Moreover, the gross production of sports industry in developed countries has reached 3-6 percent of GDP. By contrast, the gross production of sports industry in China account only for less than 1 percent of GDP. That testifies the huge potential of sports industry in China.On the basis of quantitative analysis and argumentation, this paper proposes that to promote sports industry through three aspects: to develop the environment of sports industry, to construct the investment system of sports industry, and to construct the skillful working staff in sports industry. Meanwhile, this paper also makes the related evaluation on industrial capacity of some sports events which are popular to some extent and at certain athletic level, thus comes up with a series of development guidelines for sports industry which is adaptive to China's specific condition.This paper, with the example of football industry, analyzes and sums up the problems and experiences in the developing process of sports industry. And this paper, to some extent, can provide some help for the industrialization of other sports events.
