In the new millennium, the communication across cultures is becoming more widespread than ever. Researching the economic issues from a cross-cultural perspective is becoming a new trend. Organizational culture, as one of the most strategic management ideas for modern companies, is a key factor affecting the competitive advantage and the survival of the companies. The Chinese companies have their own unique organizational cultures affected by the traditional Chinese culture; and in 1980's last century, western modern philosophies of organizational culture were introduced into China, which have attracted great attention from our companies.Since 1990's last century, China witnessed a period of dramatic changes in the banking industry, which resulting from the government-led reform and the increasing competition from home and abroad. Considering the importance of organizational culture, the Chinese banks can benefit a lot from a contrastive research on the organizational culture in order to survive in such a cut and thrust climate. CMBC as a new non-state owned commercial bank has achieved great success and built an excellent and energetic organizational culture in only ten years. Citibank is one of the most influential banking groups in the world with a lasting and attractive organization culture, from which CMBC can study its experience.Organizational culture is a two-level construct that includes both observable and unobservable characteristics of the organization. This thesis tries to compare the organizational culture between CMBC and Citibank based on these two levels. At the observable level, this thesis covers the four aspects of the organizational culture: myths and stories; mission statement, symbols and slogans; rituals and ceremonies; and physical environment. At the unobservable level, the core part (the values) of the organizational culture is examined by raising three hypotheses. Finally some suggestions are forwarded for the Chinese non-state owned banks.
