Architecture planning is a rather new concept in China, so although a general and premature theoretical framework has already taken form, research into the operational modes in government-invested projects are still scarce. As a result, architecture planning theories are making little contribution in our operational process. This paper lays its basis in architecture planning theories both home and abroad and in the operative modes in government-invested projects to locate the problems and seek a balance between architecture planning theory and the many architectural theories. This study hopes to find a feasible operation mode for government-invested projects that incorporates multiple disciplines. The first part of the paper outlines the theoretical framework for architecture planning from its basic concept and the nature of government funded architectural projects. Then this part goes on to explain why architecture planning is important in these kinds of projects. A study of the present operation mode is made here to spell out its advantages and accompanying drawbacks so as to propose an ideal mode. The second part is a discussion on the process stages and components of architecture planning in government-funded projects. This part also shows in great detail how a proposed mode can work in each stage of the operation process for a government-funded project. The third part is a case study of Shuhui Block of Yuxi Teachers' College to show how multi-discipline knowledge can be made use of in architecture planning, and to show what kind of substantial contributions architecture planning can make in government-funded projects. This part further proves the proposed mode is feasible, practical and can serve as a useful example for later projects. The goal of architecture planning is to plan for buildings in their right definition: a technical art that comes up to what it is meant in its planning, which is especially important in government-funded projects. However, as government-funded projects involve a wide range of social factors that can not be covered here in one single paper, this thesis only wants to stress the comprehensiveness of architecture planning and its application in government-funded projects in the hope of laying some basis for further studies.
