Mainly based on a study of the previous ecocritics and Cheryll Glotfelty & Harold Fromm's definition of"ecocriticism", this thesis attempts to reinterpret the main characteristics of the relations between human and nature at different stages and their development throughout, so as to sum up the unique relations , and explore its influence on ecological crisis. At the first stage, the main characteristic of the relations between human and nature is the typical separation. In effect, the separation causes man's spiritual crisis, and this is the second stage. At the third stage, man tries to establish communication and harmony with nature in order to overcome his spiritual crisis. On the whole, the relationship between human and nature is a paradox of separation and communication, that is, communication on the basis of separation—the relationship is first mainly manifested as separation, then when the separation results in man's spiritual crisis, man tries to communicate with nature and pursue a harmonious relation with nature while not denying the separation in the meantime. This thesis is composed of five parts. The first part is a general introduction to the argument, the relevant scholarship, the author's viewpoint, and the significance of the study. The second part is the main body, which is divided into three chapters. In this part, the author discusses respectively the different characteristics of nature and man at three stages, and analyzes the cause of the transformation of human's ecological thinking. The last part is the conclusion. It sums up the whole paper and discusses the significance of the unique relationship between human and nature. The author emphasizes it is the distorted human-nature relations causing human beings'spiritual crises that lead to the serious ecological crisis in contemporary world.
