The modern period from 1840-1949 was also a time that China transited from a traditional country to a modern one, during which there were many changes, conflicts emerged in sports. The research is not that easy. The paper mainly focuses on this modern form of sports on the basis of cultural transmission, analyzes and clarifies the evolutional change of the sports games from the material, institutional and conceptual angel, and then approaches the causes of the process in which modern sports survived in China. On behalf of the western industrial civilization, modern sports can be accepted and then developed, and lastly became a required part of Chinese society. The sports games were firstly brought to China as a tool to preach by those western preachers, whose aims were spreading the gospel and converting Chinese to Jesus. Because of the conflicts between this attempt and Chinese traditional culture, and the rare relationship with China's salvation, the sports games were not that popular and welcomed. With the sustainable development of sports games, especially when they arose in the international stage and became the symbol of a nation, sports games got a much closer relationship with a nation's national struggle, which speed up the construction of Chinese sports organizations, and the sign is the establishment of China National Amateur Athletic Federation. In addition, the 1932 Olympic Games and the 1934 Far Eastern Championship Games played an important role in connecting the sports games with a country's sovereignty, especially the intense conflict with Japan awaked Chinese's national consciousness, thus the importance of sports games was extended to the political level and also became a Chinese local culture. The evolution of sports games in modern China showed the development of Chinese sports, to a certain extent also reflected the changes of Chinese society. On the conclusion, the effect brought by the development of sports games in modern China is far-reaching, especially for Chinese competitive sports.
