The improvement of education quality is largely determined by the quality of teachers, and by the quality of teacher education. France is a country where the earliest education institutions were set up, and its teacher education has a long history and tradition. In the 1960s, teacher education begun to be the reserch focus in French universities. After 1991, France started to set up IUFMs, and make it serve as the professional institutions whose aim is to train teachers. The effects of French teacher education and its training model are noticable and the influence is significant. It is very worthwhile to study its history and development and analyze the internal and external elements for this development and its roles for improving teachers'professional level, and we can learn lots of things which can be used for reference to our normal education. In the early 1990s, our Chinese scholars began to go into the discussion on universitization of teacher education. After nearly 10 years'discussion and arguments, the idea of universitization of teacher education has been gradually accepted by most experts, coteries in this field and the administrative authorities, and has become a very important field for teacher education studies. On this basis, taking the teacher education in France as a case study, this thesis mainly adopts the history investigation method and documentary method to analyze the process of the development of the universitisation of teacher education in France and the basic elements which influence its development, and combines the reality of our country to compare and analyze the development tendency of universitisation of teacher education in China. The aim is to have the comprehensive pectination and analysis on the theories, practices and prospects of the universitisation of teacher education with the hope of getting inspiration from it and pushing the development of the teacher education in China.This thesis is composed of six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, showing the reasons for selecting this topic, the current situation of national and international studies, the study methods and aims. The second chapter is the theoretical base, and defines and distinguishes teacher professionalization, professionalization of teacher education and universitisation of teacher education. The third chapter is about the changes of the traditional system of teacher education in France and the reasons. The fourth chapter discusses the working situation of the current universitisation of teacher education in France from the angles of the current system, courses'development and practice characteristics. The fifth chapter is about the French teacher education model's enlightenment to Chinese teacher education and our relevant adoption. Through reviewing the development of the teacher education in China, the thesis analyzes the current situation of teacher education and the trend of universitization of teacher education, and then offers advice for the development of the current teacher education in China. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, in which major findings and limitations of the study are presented.
