Every country and nation is closely dependent each other during the 21st century. As a global language, English is the carrier of the development of science, technique, economy, and culture, and is also the necessary tool to cope with the development of times and society for every one. But the failure of traditional English teaching leads to inefficient language learning: a lot of middle school students have been wasting much time on memorizing vocabulary, but they have gained little. Exploring and reviewing the positive and effective English learning strategies is an important way to lessen the burden and improve the quality of students and education. People have made a large number of researches about learning strategy of foreign-language vocabulary from different aspects. But the problem how to master the vocabulary effectively remains to study further. Memory strategy of chunk construction refers to the learning method to form a new meaningful chunk or larger chunk by making imagery associations between the new and previous knowledge based on the characteristics of sound, morphology and meaning of vocabulary. The thesis develops the concept of memory strategy of chunk construction on the basis of the research related with the vocabulary learning, and tries to train students to use the memory strategy of chunk construction by coordination of the new and previous knowledge, and so as to improve the quality of English vocabulary learning to I st senior middle school students. Through a series of experiments such as sound-meaning association, priol vocabulary association, collocation association, difference-finding association, same morpheme association, picture association, meaning association, the experimental results show as the following points: i) The training of memory strategy of chunk construction can greatly improve the achievement of the vocabulary and skills of vocabulary learning for 1St senior middle school students. The excellent students benefit most from the grasp of vocabulary, but not significantly from the skill of vocabulary learning; the secondary students benefit from both sides significantly; the poor students from both sides insignificantly. ii) The training of memory strategy of chunk construction can arose the interest of I st senior middle school students in English learning; what抯 more, it is helpful for them to form active belief and attitude towards English learning. Especially the secondary students change more actively, but the excellent and poor students change little. iii) The significant result on the training of memory strategy of chunk construction shows that the approaches and methods used in the experiment are much feasible and effective, and the training of English vocabulary learning strategy is practicable and necessary. iv) The training of approaches and methods used in the experiment can improve the quality of English vocabulary learning significantly; therefore they have provided new and practicable methods and techniques for the English vocabulary teaching in 1st senior middle school.
