This is an explicit study on the practice of credits system practice in China. It first conducted an overall survey of its field practice, with an emphasis on the analysis of respectively the American and Japanese models, their relevant features and implications to China. Then, the thesis moved on to a retrospect, and the state-of-the-art analysis of China's practice of the system, and put forward a model.Part One introduced the contents, origin and development of the credits system, and outlined the features, advantages and disadvantages, and conditions for its execution.Part Two elaborated on the types, features, and demerits of the American and Japanese credits systems, and meanwhile probed into the possible implications of these two separate systems to China's environments.A brief history of the practice of the credits system in China's tertiary institutions was retrospected in Part Three, which began from before China's Liberation in 1949, then moved on to Immediate After Liberation Days, and finally to the Reform and Opening Period. And focus was laid on the latter.Under the heading of China's Current Practice of the Credits System, the author discussed the types, features, and growing tendency of the program. Finally, in the last part entitled "Establishing a Model with Chinese Characteristics", the author argued on the general guiding lines, governing principles, and relationships that underline such a new model. The significance of originality of this study lies in its unique insights into China's current practice of the credits system, and proposal for the construction of a model specific to the China context, that embodies the guidelines, principles, and estimated relations to cope with.
