The cultivation of reading ability among primary school students has become an important issue in Chinese teaching. This study addresses the major components and the developmental characteristics of reading ability from an empirical point of view. The main findings are:1. The reading ability structure is composed of four factors. They are: recognition ability, comprehension ability, reasoning ability, inducing and summarizing ability.2. With the rising of grade level, the reading ability of pupils is also rising. Reasoning ability, inducing and summarizing ability are the main factors affecting reading level.3. Female and male pupils don't have difference on reading ability.4. Besides, some suggestions are made about the construction of reading tests.
